COMPETENCY STATEMENT

DEFINITIONS

In this competency, teachers are prompting conversations with children and encouraging them to expand on what they are engaged in or what they are showing interest in. Teachers do this through asking open-ended questions where children are able to formulate any response.

EXAMPLES

eCIRCLE Building Vocabulary: 1-3 view commentary
Age Group: Pre-K

This video shows a teacher joining the construction center and expands on their play by reinforcing new vocabulary.

Exemplar Video: Back and forth play
Age Group: Infant

In this exemplar video the child signals interest at the doll by grasping, gazing, and vocalizing. The teacher encourages this interest by responding using a playful voice and keeps doll within reach. The teacher also elicits more response from the child by pointing out the doll’s body parts, building on child’s social skills, and creating this positive relationship between child and teacher.
