COMPETENCY STATEMENT

Models and uses language to support children’s mastery of self-help skills (cleaning up a spill, using soap when washing hands, cleaning up toys)

DEFINITIONS

Teachers help children develop independence and confidence in self-help skills by modeling tasks like cleaning up and washing hands. This fosters responsibility and self-sufficiency.

Age Group: Pre-K

In this exemplar video, a teacher asks the children if they can put the toys in the box and praises them as they do. Notice how the teacher uses clear, supportive language to guide and encourage self-help skills–an example of modeling and using language to support children’s mastery of self-help skills

In this exemplar video, a teacher asks the children to put on their shoes and says, “Do you need my help?” and “What do you need help with?” Notice how the teacher uses simple, supportive language to guide children in practicing self-help skills like putting on their shoes by themselves– an example of modeling and using language to support children’s mastery of self-help skills.
