DEFINITIONS
Children thrive when they feel valued and treated fairly. Teachers demonstrate respect by listening to children, honoring their ideas, and responding to their needs consistently. Fair treatment means holding the same expectations for all children while recognizing individual differences. When children experience fairness and respect, they develop trust and a positive sense of self.

In this exemplar video, a teacher ensures that each infant has access to the same toys and materials during play. Notice how the teacher uses consistent language when one child wants a toy from a peer and later when that peer wants the first child’s box, respectfully reminding children that everyone has their own materials and encouraging them to say “thank you” when interacting with peers, an example of treating children with fairness and respect.
