COMPETENCY STATEMENT

Assists children when needed in their communications and interactions with peers (guides them as they resolve conflicts, speak respectfully to each other, initiate and expand on each other’s play ideas)

DEFINITIONS

Teachers guide children as they talk, play, and solve problems with each other. They help children use kind words, take turns, and share ideas. This builds strong social skills and helps children learn how to work and play together.

In this exemplar video, a teacher supports a child who becomes frustrated during a peer interaction. Notice how the teacher calmly guides the child to use respectful words and say “stop” to communicate her needs—an example of assisting children with communication and interactions with peers.
