Early literacy skills are built through a variety of engaging experiences. Teachers support literacy development by reading from different genres, talking about books, the alphabet, and print, and guiding shared and interactive writing. Games that encourage phonological awareness, such as listening activities, rhyming, alliteration, and segmenting words and sentences, strengthen the foundation children need for reading and writing.
